The Matthay Festival is designed to offer participants direct and concentrated access to the Matthay teaching principles as they apply at all levels, including that of the performing artist. Daytime sessions include lectures, demonstrations, performances, and master classes, and a recital is held each evening. On Wednesday, June 13, the program will also feature the annual Clara Wells Scholarship Auditions.

The year 2007 marks the fiftieth annual gathering. Previous Matthay Festivals have taken place at many locations throughout North America, including Philips Academy at Andover, the University of Maryland, the University of Central Florida, the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, San Jose State University, Williams College, Pennsylvania State University, the University of South Carolina, Wittenberg University, the University of Kansas, Columbus State University, the University of Richmond, and Union University.







Festival Location



King College, located in Bristol, Tennessee, is in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains at an altitude of about 1,800 feet. The 130-acre hilltop campus is two miles from the center of Bristol, a city of 43,300 residents. Bristol is actually two cities of almost equal size; Bristol, Tennessee, and Bristol, Virginia.

Many Festival events will be held in the beautiful King College Memorial Chapel. The Memorial Chapel, with seating for 650, is the site of services and convocations. The lower level has classrooms, rehearsal rooms (piano, voice, organ, and harpsichord), and faculty offices for the Department of Performing and Visual Arts.

Lodging

Accommodations at special AMAP rates are available at the La Quinta Inn, which is located at Exit 7 off interstate 81 in Bristol, Virginia. The rates are $60 for Wednesday and Thursday, and $64 for Friday and Saturday evenings. Festival registrants should call 1-800-531-5900 and identify themselves as members of the American Matthay Association for Piano. The reservation bloc confirmation number is: 93346032. Banquet

The banquet is scheduled for Saturday evening, June 16, at 5:30 PM at the Country Club of Bristol, 6045 Old Jonesboro Road (423-652-1700). The driving time from King College is approximately six minutes. The price of $40 includes a choice of two appetizers (spanikopita and sausage stuffed mushrooms), two entrées (stuffed chicken and sliced roasted pork with sauce), and four vegetables. Dinner also includes a salad, bread, coffee, tea, and a choice of two desserts. There will be a cash bar with wine, beer, and liquor, while taxes, gratuity, soda, and juices are included in the banquet price.
